The Bryan College baseball team hosted Toccoa Falls College to kick off their season on Friday afternoon. The Eagles have won the NCCAA DIvision II National Championship the past two seasons. The Lions got off to a slow start as they gave up a run in the first inning and two more in the third inning to fall behind 3-0. However, the bats began to catch fire in the fifth inning as Bryan scored five runs. They added two more in the sixth inning. The Eagles scored their final run in the eighth inning. The Lions won by a final score of 7-4.
Tyler Latham and Kevin Layne led the offense with two runs batted in. Latham had two hits for the game while Layne had one. Grant Zawadzki recorded three hits, one run batted in, and scored twice. Josh Harris and Chris Jeffries had one hit and one RBI apiece. Jeffries crossed the plate twice.
Joey Vega started on the mound and earned the win. He gave up three runs, two earned, and five hits in five innings of work. He struck out seven batters. Adam Sanders pitched the next three innings, giving up one run and five hits while striking out five batters. Kenny Knudsen pitched the 9th inning, giving up just one hit and striking out two batters to earn the save.
The Lions are now 1-0 on the season. They play again on Tuesday in a doubleheader at home against Toccoa Falls College to make up the doubleheader canceled on Saturday and complete the series. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:00pm ET.
