The Bryan College men's basketball team hosted the Point University Skyhawks on Wednesday night. The Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but the Skyhawks came right back and tied the game at 10. There were six lead changes over the next few minutes. Late in the half the Lions built a lead up to 11 points and went into halftime leading 40-32. Bryan led by single digits for most of the second half. Point took a one-point lead with 1:49 remaining and was up five points with 29 seconds left on the clock. Robert Troino was fouled on a three-point attempt with 17 seconds on the clock. He hit all three free throws to cut it two points. The Lions fouled, and the Skyhawks hit their two free throws with 15 seconds left. Bryan came down and Brandon Cole scored a basket to cut it back down to two points with five seconds on the clock. Once again, the Lions fouled. This time Point missed the first attempt and made the second to make it a three-point game with three seconds to go. The ball was inbounded to Derrick Walker at midcourt. He turned, took a dribble, and fired a deep three-point attempt. Unfortunately, it fell just short off of the front of the rim, and the Lions lost by a final of 74-71.
Bryan and Point are now in a tie for third place in the conference and are only trailing the second seed by half of a game.
The Lions shot 51.8% from the floor for the game, while the Skyhawks shot 44.3%. Bryan lost both the rebounding battle and the turnover battle.
Derrick Walker led the Lions with 20 points and a game high 8 rebounds. Robert Troino added 11 points. Carrin Nash and Tim Fortenberry finished with 10 points apiece. Fortenberry also had 5 rebounds. Brandon Cole scored 9 points. Rob Riley recorded 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Rafael Tyler had a team high 4 assists.
The Lions are now 12-13 overall and 8-5 in the AAC. They play again on Saturday at St. Andrews University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00pm ET.
