The Bryan College baseball team hosted the Taylor University Trojans over the weekend. They played a doubleheader on Friday, and then another doubleheader on Saturday. The Lions won the series 3-1, improving to 10-4 on the season.
In game one on Friday, Bryan won 18-6. The Lions scored five runs in the first inning. The Trojans crossed the plate twice in the second inning. Bryan added another run in the third inning. In the fourth inning, the Trojans scored four runs followed by the Lions scoring three runs. Bryan notched nine runs in the fifth inning to conclude the scoring for the game.
Joey Underwood led the offense with four RBIs and four hits. Tyler Latham and Cody Rhinehart finished with three RBIs and three hits apiece. Latham scored three runs, and Rhinehart scored twice. Andrew Smith also had three RBIs to go with his two hits and three runs scored. Jess Cartner recorded two RBIs, two hits, and two runs scored. Lucas Jolley added three hits and one RBI. Chris Jeffries and Kevin Layne had one RBI and one hit each. Layne scored twice, while Jeffries scored once.
Joey Vega started on the mound for the Lions and pitched three and one-third innings. He gave up five runs, four earned, and four hits. Vega struck out four batters. Dylan Culver came in and pitched the final three and two-thirds innings. He gave up one run and three hits while striking out five batters. Culver earned the win.
In the second game, Bryan lost 6-2. The Lions scored a run in the first inning off a solo homerun from Grant Zawadzki. The Trojans tied the game in the second inning and then scored a run in the fourth inning to take the lead. They scored three in the fifth and one in the sixth to extend the lead. Bryan was able to get one back in the seventh.
Grant Zawadzki recorded one RBI, one hit, and one run scored off of his solo homerun. Zach Hensley scored the Lions other run. Chris Jefferies, Tyler Latham, Kevin Layne, Cody Rhinehart, and Joey Underwood had one hit apiece.
John Cain started on the mound for the Lions and received the loss. He gave up five runs on five hits in four and two-thirds innings of work. Cain struck out five batters. Adam Sanders came in gave up two walks. Kevin Carr pitched the next one and one-third innings. He gave up one run and one hit. Isaac Meyers came in and pitched the final inning. He gave up no hits or runs and struck out one batter.
In game one on Saturday, the Lions won the game 9-1. Bryan scored two runs in both the first and second innings. Both teams crossed the plate once in the fourth inning. The Lions added one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning.
Kevin Layne finished with two RBIs, one hit, and two runs scored. Jess Cartner and Cody Rhinehart recorded two hits, one RBI, and one run scored apiece. Tyler Latham and Grant Zawadzki had one RBI, one hit, and one run scored each. Andrew Smith added one hit and one RBI.
Tristan Speak started on the mound and pitched all seven innings to earn the win. He gave up one unearned run and four hits while striking out five batters.
In the final game of the series, Bryan won 7-3. The Lions scored one run in the first inning. They scored three runs in the second off of a three-run homerun from Kevin Layne. Taylor scored two runs in the third and one run in the fourth inning. Bryan added three runs in the sixth inning, including a two-run homerun from Kevin Layne.
Kevin Layne led the offense with five RBIs and two runs scored off of his two homeruns. Chris Jeffries recorded two hits, one RBI, and scored two runs. Jess Cartner added one hit and one RBI. Five other Lions had one hit.
Hunter Tipton was the starting pitcher for Bryan and threw four and one-third innings. He gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits. Tipton earned the win. Dylan Culver pitched the next one and two-thirds innings. He gave up only one hit and no runs. Kenny Knudsen pitched the final inning, giving up no runs and two hits.
The Lions play again on Wednesday in a single 9-inning game verse Cumberland University. The game is scheduled to start at 3:00pm ET.
