The Bryan College baseball team hosted Cumberland University on Wednesday. The game was scheduled for 9 innings, but with the score notched at 10 after the 9th, they had to go into extra innings to decide the winner. Bryan shut out Cumberland in the top of the 10th. Then with runners on the corner and only one out, Andrew Smith hit a single to score Tyler Latham and get the Lions the win.
Both teams scored a run apiece in the second and third innings, the Lions' second inning run came off of a homerun by Jess Cartner. Cumberland added another in the fourth inning. Bryan scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead. Both teams crossed the plate once in the sixth. In the seventh inning, the Bulldogs scored six runs. However, the Lions scored four runs in the eighth inning off of a grand slam by Tyler Latham to tie the game. Then in the 10th inning, the Lions scored a run to get the win.
Tyler Latham hit a grand slam and finished the game with four RBIs, two hits, and three runs scored. Jess Cartner had a solo homerun and recorded three RBIs, three hits, and one run scored for the game. Andrew Smith had three hits and two RBIs, including the game-winning hit and RBI. Grant Zawadzki tallied three hits, one RBI, and two runs scored. Kevin Layne added one RBI and one hit. Chris Jeffries had two hits and scored two runs.
The Lions had five different pitchers see time on the mound. LJ Rowden started and pitched the first five and two-thirds innings. He gave up four runs, three earned, and seven hits. Dylan Culver finished the sixth and started the seventh inning to record two-thirds an inning of work. He gave up four runs and three hits. Isaac Meyers came in and faced five batters but only got one out. He gave up two runs and two hits. Kevin Carr finished the seventh inning and pitched the eighth inning, giving up no runs or hits. Kenny Knudsen pitched the final two innings and earned the win. He faced six batters and got all six out, including two strikeouts.
The Lions are now 11-4 overall. They play again this weekend in a three-game series at Virginia Intermont College to open up conference play. Friday's 9-inning game is scheduled to start at 6:00pm ET, while Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1:00pm ET.
