The Bryan College baseball team hosted the Montreat College Cavaliers for a three-game conference series. The Lions won the nine-inning game 3-2 in the 11th inning on Friday night. On Saturday, Bryan won game one 10-6 and then won game two 2-1. The Lions are now 14-8 overall and 3-3 in the AAC.
On Friday night, Montreat scored two runs in the first inning to take the early lead. Bryan scored two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Neither team was able to cross the plate again in regulation. The game headed into extra innings. With two out in the bottom of the 11th inning, the Lions were able to string together three singles to knock in a run and get the win.
Cody Rhinehart had a game high two RBIs to go with his one hit. Jess Cartner finished with one RBI and one hit. Tyler Latham went 5-for-5 from the plate, including two doubles and three singles. Grant Zawadzki added three hits.
Kenny Knudsen started on the mound and pitched the first eight innings. He gave up two runs and three hits while striking four batters. Joey Vega came in and pitched the final three innings and earned the win. He held the opponent hitless and scoreless.
In game one on Saturday, the two offenses found their rhythm. Both teams scored two runs in the first and second innings. The Lions scored three in the third, including a two-run homerun by Andrew Smith, to take the lead. They added another run in the fourth. Both teams crossed the plate twice in the sixth inning to conclude the scoring.
Andrew Smith finished the game with three RBIs, one hit, and one run scored. Cody Rhinehart recorded two hits, one RBI, and two runs scored. Jess Cartner had two hits and one RBI. Kevin Layne tallied one RBI, one hit, and two runs scored. Josh Harris added one hit and one RBI. Joey Underwood scored twice and had two hits.
Tristan Speak started on the mound for the Lions and earned the win. He gave up four runs and eight hits in five innings of work. Hunter Tipton pitched the 6th inning, giving up two runs and two hits. Joey Vega pitched the final inning and held the Cavaliers from getting a hit or a run.
The series finished with a pitching battle in game two on Saturday. Both teams scored a run in the second innings. The Lions scored the game-winning run in the fourth.
LJ Rowden pitched the entire game for Bryan and earned the win. He gave up just the one run and six hits in seven innings of work.
The Lions play again on Tuesday at Campbellsville University. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2:00pm ET.
