The Bryan College baseball team traveled across the river to Cleveland, Tenn., to take on Lee University. The Flames are ranked No. 3 in the nation according to the preseason coaches' poll. The Lions got on the scoreboard first by scoring three runs in the third inning. They added another run in the fifth inning. Lee crossed the plate three times in the sixth inning to get within one. Bryan extended their lead in the ninth inning off of a two-run homerun by Kevin Layne. The Lions won by a final score of 6-3.
Kevin Layne finished the game with two RBIs, two hits, and two runs scored. Grant Zawadzki recorded two hits, one RBI, and two runs scored. Andrew Smith tallied one hit and one RBI. Cody Rhinehart added one RBI.
John Cain started on the mound for the Lions and received the win. He gave up three runs and seven hits while striking out three batters in six and two-thirds innings of work. Dylan Culver finished out the seventh inning and pitched the eighth inning. He struck out one batter and gave up no hits or runs. Joey Vega threw the final inning and earned the save. He gave up two hits and no runs.
The Lions improve to 15-13 on the season. They play again this weekend in a three-game conference series at Reinhardt University. The single 9-inning game is scheduled to start at 4:00pm ET on Friday, and then the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2:00pm ET on Saturday.
