The Bryan College baseball hosted the Union College Bulldogs in a conference three game series over the weekend. The Lions won game one of the doubleheader on Friday 5-4, but lost game two 3-1. Then on Saturday, Bryan won the nine-inning game by a final score of 8-4. The Lions are now 18-16 on the season and 6-9 in the AAC.
In game one on Friday, the two teams kicked off the series by scoring two runs in each of their first at-bat. The Lions crossed the plate once in the third to take the lead. The Bulldogs tied the game in the fourth inning. Bryan scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take back control of the game. Union scored a run to get within one run in the fifth, but the Lions were able to hold them off and get the win.
Cody Rhinehart led the offense with three hits and two RBIs. Kevin Layne recorded two hits and one RBI. Jess Cartner notched one hit and one RBI. Tyler Latham added two hits and one run scored. Chris Jeffries, Blake Johnson, Joey Underwood, and Grant Zawadzki had one hit apiece. Johnson and Underwood scored a run each.
Kenny Knudsen started on the mound for the Lions and received the win. He gave up four runs and seven hits in five innings of work. Isaac Meyers came in and pitched two-thirds of an inning. He gave up one hit and no runs. Joey Vega pitched the final one and one-third innings to earn the save. He held the opponent hitless and scoreless.
In game two on Friday, the Bulldogs scored three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. The Lions scored their only run in the sixth inning.
LJ Rowden started on the mound and received the loss. He gave up three runs and six hits in five and one-third innings of work. Dylan Culver pitched the next one and one-third innings and gave up no hits. Kevin Carr came in and struck out the one batter that he faced.
In the single 9-inning game on Saturday, Union scored a run in their first at-bat. Bryan scored three runs off a three-run homerun by Kevin Layne in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth inning and two in the seventh inning. The Lions crossed the plate once in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Tyler Latham hit a walk off grand slam to win the game.
Tyler Latham recorded four RBIs, one hit, and one run scored off his homerun. Kevin Layne finished with three RBIs, two hits, and one run scored. Cody Rhinehart added two hits and one run scored. Joey Underwood tallied one hit, one RBI, and one run scored. Jess Cartner, Josh Harris, and Blake Johnson had one hit apiece. Johnson scored one run. Chris Jeffries and Colton Roberts crossed the plate one time each.
Tristan Speak started on the mound for the Lions and pitched the first six innings. He gave up four runs, three earned, and six hits. Kevin Carr pitched the last three innings and earned the win. He gave up four hits and no runs.
The Lions play again on Tuesday at home verse Oakwood University. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 5:00pm ET.
