The Bryan College baseball team hosted Hiwassee College over the weekend in a three-game series. The Lions won the nine-inning game 12-5. Bryan won game one of the doubleheader 8-5, and won game two 13-0. The Lions are now 23-16 on the season.
In the nine-inning game on Friday, the Lions scored one run in their first at-bat. In the third inning, Josh Harris hit a three-run homerun to give Bryan the lead. The Tigers scored two runs in the fourth inning. The Lions crossed the plate once in the fourth. Bryan added five runs in the sixth. Hiwassee scored one run in the seventh and two in the eighth. The Lions scored their final two runs in the eighth.
Josh Harris led the offense with six runs batted in to go with his two hits and two runs scored. Blake Johnson and Hunter Tipton had two hits and two RBIs apiece. Johnson also scored two runs. Tyler Latham had a game high three hits and one RBI. Andrew Smith added one RBI. Joey Underwood recorded one hit and scored three runs. Cody Rhinehart notched one hit and two runs scored. Chris Jeffries tallied one hit and one run scored. Jess Cartner had one hit.
Kenny Knudsen started on the mound and earned the win. He gave up three runs, one earned, and six hits in seven innings of work. Isaac Meyers pitched the eighth inning. He gave up two runs and two hits while striking out two batters. Kevin Carr pitched the ninth inning and gave up just one hit and no runs.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Lions scored four runs in the second inning, including a three-run homerun by Grant Zawadzki, to take the early lead. Andrew Smith hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the third to add to the lead. They crossed the plate two more times in the fifth. The Tigers scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Lions got one back in the bottom of the inning. Hiwassee concluded the scoring with two runs in the seventh.
Grant Zawadzki led the offense with two hits, three RBIs, and one run scored. Joey Underwood recorded one hit, one RBI, and two runs scored. Andrew Smith finished with one hit, one RBI, and one run scored. Josh Harris and Kevin Layne had one RBI apiece. Blake Johnson added one hit and one run scored.
Tristan Speak started on the mound for the Lions and received the win. He gave up three runs, one earned, and three hits in five and two-thirds innings of work. Speak struck out six batters. Dylan Culver pitched the final one and one-third innings. He gave up two runs and two hits.
In game two, the Lions scored four runs in the third to take control of the game. They added five more runs in the fourth, including a grand slam by Blake Johnson. The Lions concluded the scoring with four more runs in the fifth inning.
Blake Johnson finished the game with five RBIs, one hit, and one run scored. Grant Zawadzki recorded three hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Cody Rhinehart notched two hits and two RBIs. Joey Underwood added one hit, one RBI, and two runs scored. Tyler Latham had one RBI and one run scored. Jess Cartner tallied two hits and two runs scored. Lucas Jolley and Kevin Layne had one hit apiece.
LJ Rowden started on the mound for the Lions and received the win. He pitched six and one-third innings, striking out eight batters and only giving up one hit. Joey Vega finished the seventh inning. He gave up one hit and struck out one batter.
The Lions play again on Tuesday at Southern Polytechnic State University. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2:00pm ET.
