The Bryan College baseball team traveled to Point University over the weekend to compete in their final series of the regular season. On Friday, the Lions lost game one of the doubleheader 4-2 but turned around and won game two 3-2. Then on Saturday, Bryan won the single nine-inning game 7-1. The Lions end the regular season with an overall record of 29-24 and an AAC record of 10-14.
In the only loss on the weekend, the Lions scored a run in their first at-bat off of a solo homerun by Josh Harris. The Skyhawks tied the game in the second inning. Both teams crossed the plate once in the third inning. Point scored one run in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth to get the win.
Kenny Knudsen was the starting pitcher for Bryan and received the loss. He gave up four runs, two earned, and five hits in five and one-third innings of work. Joey Vega came in and finished the sixth inning. He gave up one hit and struck out one batter.
In the second game of the doubleheader, both teams scored a run in the fourth inning. The Lions scored one in the fourth inning to take the lead. The Skyhawks tied the game in their final at-bat to send the game into extra innings. Bryan crossed the plate once in the eighth inning to get the win.
Grant Zawadzki led the offense with two hits, one RBI, and one runs scored. Kevin Layne and Cody Rhinehart had one hit and one RBI apiece. Chris Jeffries tallied two hits. Joey Underwood recorded one hit and one run scored. Tyler Carroll scored the other run.
LJ Rowden started on the mound for the Lions and pitched the first five innings. He gave up one run and six hits while striking out six batters. Joey Vega pitched the next three innings and earned the win. He gave up one run and four hits while striking out five batters.
In the nine-inning game, Point scored a run in the second inning to get on the score board first. Bryan scored two runs in the fourth inning, three in the eighth, and two in the ninth to earn the win.
Blake Johnson recorded two hits and three RBIs for the game. Kevin Layne finished with three hits, one RBI, and two runs scored. Chris Jeffries and Cody Rhinehart notched two hits and one RBI apiece. Josh Harris and Grant Zawadzki tallied two hits and scored one run each. Joey Underwood added one hit.
John Cain was the starting pitcher and earned the win. He gave up just one run and four hits in seven innings of work. Cain had a season high nine strikeouts. Isaac Meyers began the eighth inning and recorded two outs. He gave up one hit. Joey Vega came in and finished the eighth inning and threw the ninth. He gave up zero hits and struck out two of the five batters that he faced.
The Lions enter the AAC Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will face No. 2 Union College on Tuesday. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00pm ET.
