Bryan College played host for a baseball invitational this past weekend.  There were a total of 8 teams, including Bryan, that participated in the tournament.  It was set up so that there were two pools of four teams.  Each team played the other 3 teams in their respective pool.  After pool play, the teams were seated 1st through 4th and played the team with the same ranking from the other pool.
 

In the first game, the Lions were matched up against Southeastern University out of Lakeland, FL. The Fire have won 4 straight NCCAA Division II National Championships. The Lions came out strong in the first inning but struggled after that.

Mark Barnwell got the start for the Lions. He started off by striking out the first three batters to step to the plate. However, Barnwell was unable to keep that going. He was the losing pitcher as he went 3 & 1/3 innings giving up 9 runs on 6 hits. Daniel Zimmerman pitched the final 1 & 2/3 innings, giving up 2 runs off of 2 hits.

Jonathan Brown and Zach Bowe had the only two Lion hits for the game.

In the second game, the Lions faced Taylor University out of Upland, IN. The Lions scored first, taking a 1-0 lead after the 2nd inning. In the top of the 3rd, Taylor scored 3 runs to take the lead. Bryan responded by scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score, followed by 3 runs in the 5th to take a 6-3 lead. However, the Lions were unable to score again and Taylor knocked in 5 runs between the 6th and 7th innings for the win. Taylor went on to win the tournament.
 
Tyler Brown was the starting and losing pitcher for Bryan. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 7 runs on 10 hits with 7 strike outs. Ben Young came in to pitch the final 2 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits.
 
Bryan had a total of 10 hits for the game. Ryan Henn and Brantley Hattrich were the only Lions with 2 or more hits apiece. JD Davis, Matt Hicks, and Will Newman each had a homerun.

In the third game of the invitational, the Lions defeated Urbana University out of Urbana, OH. The Lions had to come from behind to win this game. Urbana took a 2-0 lead, scoring in the 3rd inning and again in the top of the 5th inning. The Lions scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to tie the game. Urbana then scored 2 runs to go back up in the 6th. Bryan waited until the bottom of the 7th to score three runs for the win.
 
Zach Breazeale started on the mound for the Lions. He pitched 6 innings, giving up 4 runs off of 5 hits. He also had 3 strikeouts. Brantley Hattrich came in and pitched the 7th inning. He struck out 2 batters and received the win.
 
JD Davis and Will Newman combined for 4 of Bryan's 6 hits and 4 of the team's 5 RBI's. One of JD's hits was for a homerun.

Bryan finished 3rd in their pool, so for their final game of the invitational they faced Indiana Wesleyan University (Marion, IN) who finished 3rd in the opposite pool. Bryan was considered the visiting team for this game, which took place at Walker Valley High School in Cleveland, TN. The Lions scored 1st again, getting up 2-0 by scoring in the top of the 4th and 5th innings. The Wildcats followed that by scoring 4 in the bottom of the 5th and 1 run in the 6th. In the 7th inning, the Lions tried to take back but the lead but were only able to score 1 run.
 
Ben Young started on the mound for the Lions. He pitched 4 & 1/3 innings and earned the loss by giving up 4 runs on 6 hits. Brantley Hattrich came in to pitch the last 1 & 2/3 innings. He gave up 1 run on 2 hits, but struck out the other 5 batters he faced.
 
JD Davis, Branlty Hattrich, and Drew Brown each had 2 hits apiece to combine for 6 of Bryan's 7 hits. Hattrich had 2 of the teams 3 RBI's.

The Lions are now 4-8 overall. They play again on Tuesday at Reinhardt College. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 PM EST.
