The Bryan College baseball team competed against Culver-Stockton College this evening in the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round. The Lions are the No. 4 seed in the Kingsport Bracket, while the Wildcats are the No. 5 seed. Culver-Stockton defeated Bryan in the first game of the Opening Round, but Bryan won tonight's elimination game 5-4 on a walk-off homerun. The baseball team is now 35-27 on the season. They play again tomorrow at 11:00am against No. 3 Cumberland University.
The Lions struck first with three runs in the second inning, including a two-run homerun by Kelvin McMiller. Bryan added another run in the sixth inning. The Wildcats scored three runs in the seventh inning and then one run in the ninth to tie the game. Kevin Roberts was the first Lion to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with the score tied. With a 2-1 count, Roberts hit a homerun over the right field wall to win the game.
Justin Morhardt led the offense with two runs batted in, three hits, and one run scored. Kelvin McMiller finished with two RBIs, two hits, and one run scored. Kevin Roberts recorded one RBI, two hits, and one run scored. Cody Rhinehart and Crandon Wallace logged one hit and one run scored apiece. Preston King and Joey Underwood added one hit each.
Kenny Knudsen pitched all nine innings for the Lions and earned the win. He gave up four runs and eight hits. Knudsen struck out seven batters.
