The Lions opened their 2015 campaign at the historic Prater's Mill in Varnell, Ga. at the DSC Twilight Classic, Friday evening. Dalton State College (Ga.) played host to 10 teams, including Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) teams Bryan College, Reinhardt (Ga.), and SCAD-Atlanta (Ga.).
Despite the late start time, the temperature was high when the Lady Lions toed the start line, where they were led by Jessica Stockton (SR/Front Royal, Va.) and Sarah White (SR/Cleveland, OH) who finished 7th and 11th respectively. Xia Grimwood (SR/Cordova, AK) also had a great race, while she was able to push through the relentless heat and finish just outside the top 30, helping in produce a 4th place finish for the Lady Lions.
The men were led by top-five finishers Griffith Rutherford (SO/Thomasville, Ga.) and Tyler Boone (JR/Murfreesboro, Tenn.), who took notched a 3rd and 4th place finish. Kyle Fields (FR/Stone Mountain, Ga.) also helped the Lions with a solid race and top-20 finish. By the end of the race the Lions had secured a second-place finish.
"I'm proud of our team today. They came out and did what I asked them to do. We wanted to stay relaxed early and be aggressive late and that's exactly what most of our runners did. It's early in the season and we have a lot of work to do but today was a sign of things to come," stated head Coach Josh Bradley.
