Pineville, Ky. - The Bryan Lions Men's Golf team performed well on Day 1 of the Union Bulldog Invitational played at Wasiota Winds Golf Course in Pineville, Ky. but they still found themselves trailing #21 ranked Union (Ky.) (who hosted the tournament) by 5 strokes and St. Andrews (N.C.) (the first day leader) by 11 strokes after shooting a 298 openly day score. But Senior Lion, Colby Roach (SR/Jasper, Tenn.), set a school individual day record of 4 under par (-4) 68 and junior transfer, Carson Griffin (NA) birdied the final hole in shooting a two under (-2) par 70 to lead the Bryan Lions to an amazing comeback in winning the Union Bulldog Invitational in the 9 team tournament.
Roach fired 4 birdies on the opening nine holes at the demanding Wasiota Winds Course and had several near misses on the back nine in route to a new individual day record. Roach was coming off an All-Tournament performance at the Reinhardt Invitational and capped off a strong comeback on Day 2 of the tournament which led the Lions to a new Team Record on Day 2, shooting a 3 under par team total of 285 making up 12 strokes the second day to edge St. Andrews and Union by one stroke. The low scorer for the Bryan Lions during the both days was Sophomore, Nick Scully (SO/Carelton, MI), who fired back to back 73's (73-73=146), missing the all-tournament team by one stroke. Second to Scully in overall score were Junior Tom Durbin (JR/Wildnes Chesire, England) (73-74=147) and Senior Colby Roach (79-68=147). Other scores for the Lions included: Sophomore Clayton Myers (SO/Warren County, Tenn.) (73-75=148), Freshman Paul Houk (NA), (75-77=152), Junior Carson Griffin, (85-70=155) and Freshman Chandler Cassel (NA), (81-77=158)
This oustanding win for the Lions came against several of the AAC top teams including #21 ranked Union (on their home course), St. Andrews, Reinhardt (Ga.) (winner of the Reinhardt Invitational last week) and Milligan (Tenn.). Head Lions Golf Coach, Peter Bollant mentioned, "This contest is a tremendous confidence builder for us as the upcoming AAC Fall Conference Championship is in two weeks."
Bollant commented about how proud he was of the great comeback of the Lions and wanted to give Jesus the glory for giving the Lions Golfers calmness and courage in overcoming an 11-stroke deficit after Day 1. "We just felt His peace and strength from the opening hole this morning and sensed His presence all round in the exciting comeback," stated Bollant. "We are excited in preparing for the competition in the AAC Championship."
The Lions Men's Golf Team continues play Oct. 19-20 in Laurinburg, N.C. at the Scotch Meadows Country Club for the AAC Championship.
