Athens, Tenn. – Brandon Cole (SR/Crossville, Tenn.)'s fifth double-double this season while leading all players with 33 points and 12 rebounds yesterday was not enough as the Bulldog's Justin Simmons drained a shot behind the arc with 15 seconds left to play to give Tennessee Wesleyan a 90-89 win over Bryan.
Cole finished 14-24 from the floor, while Troino followed with his second highest scoring game this season with 16 points going 6-9 and 4-7 from long range. Oteriah Lee (SO/Knoxville, Tenn.) also put registered a notable performance with a season-high 14 points and team-high six assists. Finishing 3-7 behind the arc, Tyler Yoder (SO/Crossville, Tenn.) was another Lion who finished with double-digit scoring.
The Lions got off to a quick start and managed to hold the lead until six minutes into play the Bulldogs leveled it 16-16. Cole and Lee were able to regain the lead for Bryan midway through the first half, but Tennessee Wesleyan countered with a three-pointer which seemed to stop the momentum of the Lions. Bryan was unable to cut the deficit as Tennessee Wesleyan carried an eight-point lead into the break, 53-45.
Bryan produced a 7-0 run to start the second half, making a one-point game. Again, Lee and Cole both took turns evening the score out 56-56 and 58-58, but the difference maker came from a Troino three-pointer and back-to-back buckets from Cole putting the Lions up 60-65.
With nine minutes left to play, the Lions expanded their lead to ten, 65-75. The Bulldogs answered back with a 12-0 run to capture the lead. As the final minutes expired, Cole gave the Lions a two-point lead with 21 seconds left after knocking down 1-2 from the foul line, making it 87-89. Deciding not to go for the equalizer, Simmons from the Bulldogs pulled up behind the arc and made the game-winning shot with 15 seconds left to play, posting the 90-89 decision.
The Lions move to 4-4 overall and drop to 1-2 in AAC play.
Bryan returns to action Dec. 1 on the road against non-conference opponent, Oakwood University (Ala.).
