Dayton, Tenn. – Despite Brandon Cole (SR/Crossville, Tenn.)'s 11th double double of the season and Oteriah Lee (SO/Knoxville, Tenn.)'s near double double after scoring a career-high 18 points, shooting 7-for-14 and registering nine assists, the Reinhardt University Eagles (Ga.) rallied to take the lead late into the first half and never surrendered it as they defeated the Lions 98-103.
The Lions move to 10-8 overall and 5-4 in Appalachian Athletic Conference action, while Reinhardt improves to 10-9 and 5-5 in conference play.
Cole led all scorers with 33 points, knocking down 13-for-21 for the game, and led all rebounders with 12 boards. Lee followed with a career high 18 points, shooting 7-for-14, and led all players in assists. Cole remains the total scoring leader in the AAC and in NAIA Division II with 528 points. He ranks first in the conference and second in NAIA Division II in points per game (29.3). Lee sits in first place in the AAC in both total assists (107) and assists per game (5.9). He ranks ninth in NAIA Division II in assists per game and 12th in total assists.
Robert Troino (SR/Crossville, Tenn.) chipped in an impressive 15 points, going 6-for-14 for the game and aided with four rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Tyler Yoder (SO/Crossville, Tenn.) was the Lions weapon from the perimeter, as he shot 4-for-7 for the game and 3-for-4 behind the arc for 14 points. He also corralled four rebounds. Brice Cusick (SO/Jefferson City, Tenn.) finished with a notable nine points, shooting 3-for-6 for the game and 2-for-4 from the three-point line.
The Lions jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead with a second-chance basket from Troino and two three-pointers from Yoder. Reinhardt countered with a 7-1 run to tie things up 9-9. Runs from both teams defined the beginning of the game as Bryan answered back with a 10-2 run to gain a 19-11 lead. Over the next two minutes Reinhardt battled for a 9-2 run to cut Bryan's lead to one point, 21-20.
At the nine-minute mark, the Eagles managed to level the score 27-27. Reinhardt maintained pressure and took control with their first lead of the game, 27-29. Unable to extend their lead, the Lions battled back for the lead as each team exchanged basket after basket. With five minutes left until halftime, Bryan had a slight advantage over the Eagles. Reinhardt responded by dominating the closing minutes of the first half with a 14-3 run to carry a 43-51 lead into the break.
Reinhardt continued to hold off the Lions, eventually building a 13-point lead over the Lions, 56-69, after six minutes into the second half. Bryan did all they could to hang with Reinhardt's up-tempo play, and when down 86-99 the Lions crafted a 9-0 run to cut the Eagle's deficit to four, 95-99. Reinhardt scored their next two points off bonus free throws before Lee connected on a shot to cut the lead back to four points. An offensive foul called on Reinhardt with 30 seconds left sent Lee to the foul line where he drilled the shot to make it 98-101.
As the game came to a close, the Eagles knocked down two free throws and the Lions could not find success on their end of the court as Reinhardt finished the night with a 98-103 win.
The Lions pick up play on the road on Wednesday, Jan. 20th, against 6th ranked Union College (Ky.) in an AAC showdown. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
