Bluefield, Va. – After having over a week off from playing due to two games being postponed because of wintry weather, the Bryan Lions Men's Basketball team traveled last night to fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, Bluefield College (Va.), to play their tenth conference game of the season. Even though the Lions outscored the Rams 38-32 in the first half, Bluefield disregarded the poor 35.5 percent first half shooting and responded in the second half with a 52.8 percent shooting performance. The Rams produced a 56-point second half outing, while the Lions put up 35 points in an 88-73 Bluefield win.
The last time these two teams met was on Dec. 3, and the Lions prevailed with an 80-72 victory at home.
AAC total scoring (556), points per game (29.26), total rebounds (215), and double-doubles (12) leader Brandon Cole (SR/Crossville, Tenn.) added another double-double to his collection, posting 28 points and 11 rebounds in his forty minutes in action. He shot 7-for-16 on the night, along with going 12-for-14 from the foul line.
Cole wasn't the only Lion to give the Rams any issues; Robert Troino (SR/Crossville, Tenn.) pieced together a thrilling execution on the court with a season-high 22 points, concluding the contest 8-for-19 from the floor, 3-for-8 from deep, and 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
Reagan Johnson (SO/Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) aided the Lions with 10 points, which was the only other player from Bryan to end in double-digits. He shot 3-for-7 on the night, 2-for-5 behind the arc, and added three rebounds. Brice Cusick (SO/Jefferson City, Tenn.) was involved on the glass, grabbing seven of Bryan's 36 rebounds for the game.
The loss drops Bryan's overall record to 10-9 and 5-5 in conference action. Bluefield moves to 11-9 overall and carries a 4-7 AAC record.
After a clash in the beginning of the first half to establish any sort of lead by either team, Cusick grabbed a missed bucket from Bluefield, ran back down the floor, and hit a shot to put Bryan up 9-7. The Lion's lead wouldn't be surrendered until four minutes into the start of the second half. After gaining the lead from Cusick's basket, Bryan rallied for a 9-2 run to jump ahead 18-9. Unable to build the lead to double-digits, Bluefield slowly cut away at Bryan's lead throughout the first half, making the deficit one point on many occasions. The Lion's five unanswered points in the closing of the first half, scored by Cole and Troino, gave Bryan a 38-32 lead at halftime.
At the 17:21 mark in the second half, Bluefield leveled things out 40-40. One minute later a steal and second-chance basket put the Rams on top, 42-40. A few lead changes later, Bluefield regained the lead at 49-47 and would retain the lead for the rest of the game.
With 3:22 left to play, Oteriah Lee (SO/Knoxville, Tenn.) hit an open Troino for the three-point equalizer to give the Lions an opportunity at a comeback, making it 67-67. Over the next three minutes Bluefield outscored Bryan 21-6 to secure an 88-73 conference win.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, in a conference matchup against Tennessee Wesleyan slated for 4pm.
