Dayton, Tenn. – On Wednesday night, Feb. 10, the Bryan Lions Men's Basketball team hosted fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference foe, Point University (Ga.), in a shootout for an edge in conference standings, but a Skyhawks red-hot offense cruised their way past the Lions 82-73 and leveled both teams for fifth place in the AAC.
Bryan falls to 12-12 overall and 7-8 in conference action, while Point moves their overall record to 10-17 and 7-8 in the AAC. Just a game and a half separate teams three through six in the conference standings.
AAC scoring and rebounding leader, Brandon Cole (SR/Crossville, Tenn.), pieced together a 26-point outing, leading all scorers, while shooting 10-for-18 in the game. He had a quite night on the boards, snatching up five rebounds, but teammate Riley Dempsey (FR/Dunlap, Tenn.) helped with eight rebounds, tying a season-high rebounding performance matched earlier in the year against Johnson University (Nov. 3). Dempsey chipped in five points (2-for-3).
Robert Troino (SR/Crossville, Tenn.) and Oteriah Lee (SO/Knoxville, Tenn.) were the only other Lions to land in double-digits. Troino knocked down 5-of-12 shots for 13 points and produced a game-high six assists. Lee followed with 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting and dished out four assists.
Tyler Yoder (SO/Crossville, Tenn.) was just shy of double-digits, scoring eight points (3-for-6) and securing four rebounds. Terrance Scales (SO/Cedar Bluff, Ala.) dropped seven points against the Skyhawks, connecting on 2-of-3 shooting.
The Lions controlled a 7-5 lead at the 14:32 mark of the first half, before the Skyhawks jumped ahead 8-5 with a three-pointer and never surrendered the lead for the duration of the game.
Pulling ahead with a 37-30 advantage at the halftime break, Point made things difficult for Bryan by finishing 50.0 percent from the floor and 50.0 behind the arc in the second half. The Lions shot a notable 45.9 percent for the game but struggled getting shots to fall from deep (3-for-13 from three point line in second half). The Skyhawks outrebounded the Lions 37-29 for the game.
After falling down 37-30 at the half, the Lions kept fighting to cut the deficit and brought the score to a one-possession game with 14:25 to play in the second half, 47-44.
A basket by Lee with just under five minutes left of play dipped Point's lead to single-digits. The Skyhawks responded with a quick score, regaining a 10-point lead, 68-58. In the final minutes of the game, Point did not allow Bryan to cut their lead to single-digits until a last second shot by Lee, sealing an 82-73 conference win for the visiting Skyhawks.
The Lions travel to Montreat College (N.C.) tomorrow, Feb.13, for another AAC matchup with tipoff slated for 4pm.
