Montreat, N.C. – The Bryan Lions Men's Basketball team got in trouble early on Saturday, Feb. 13, when they traveled to McAlister Gymnasium to faceoff against fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, Montreat College Cavaliers (N.C.).
After the Cavaliers broke off a 26-8 run to set the mood in the first half, the Lions battled to cut the deficit to nine points by the halftime break, 48-39. Bryan slowly whittled away at Montreat's lead, eventually knocking down a free throw with 3:16 left in the game to bring the Lions within 10 points, 83-73. The Cavaliers took all hope away, countering with a 10-2 run to regain an 18-point lead, 93-75. Montreat coasted to a 95-83 victory, improving their overall record to 4-18 and 3-14 in AAC play. Bryan dropped to 12-13 overall and moved to 7-9 in conference.
Bryan had a tough time stopping Montreat's offense as they finished the first half with a 50.0 percent shooting percentage (17-for-34) and fired 6-for-13 behind the arc for 46.2 percent. The Cavaliers almost kept up with their first half pace in the latter period, ending the game 49.2 from the floor. The Lions were held to 36.5 percent shooting (27-for-74) in the game and 27.6 percent from long distance (8-for-29).
Brandon Cole (SR/Crossville, Tenn.), along with three other Lions, registered double-digit points. Cole led the team with 23 points on 5-of-16 shooting and sank 13-of-16 free throws. Cole, Tyler Yoder (SO/Crossville, Tenn.), Brice Cusick (SO/Jefferson City, Tenn.), and Riley Dempsey (FR/Dunlap, Tenn.) all recorded seven rebounds apiece. Oteriah Lee (SO/Knoxville, Tenn.) followed Cole in scoring with 15 points (5-for-9) and dished out three assists. Jeff Long (SR/Hendersonville, Tenn.) tallied 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting (3-for-9 from three-point line). Yoder chipped in 11 points after shooting 4-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-8 from deep.
