Acworth, Ga. – On the opening hole for the second day of the NAIA National Qualifier, junior Bryan Lion, Bryce Pickens (SO/Sevierville, Tenn.), lofted a beautiful 80 yard wedge shot over the deep bunker on the difficult #10 hole at the Governor's Towne Club, landing it at the edge of the green and softly rolling it downhill into the cup for an opening eagle. Pickens went on to fire a 76 to go with his other rounds of 76 and 77 to finish at 229 placing him at 23rd in the field, which was two strokes behind fellow Lion, Nick Scully (SO/Carelton, Mich.), who fired a 75, 76, 76=227 to notch 16th place.
The Lions began day one of the National Qualifier shooting an opening round 301, which at the time with only six teams' scores having been calculated placed them in second place. Unfortunately after the second and third round scores were tallied, the Lions had faded back in the pack registering in 8th place with a three round total of 920.
Sophomore, Lucas Coffelt (SO/Jasper, Tenn.), had the low single round score for the Lions completing an opening round 73, but he was not able to hold that early momentum and finished at 233 for 34th place. Other scores for the Lions were 231 for Tom Durbin (JR/Wildnes Chesire, England) finishing 31st and Paul Houk (FR/Athens, Tenn.) at 245 in 46th place.
Reinhardt University, the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season champion, was the tournament winner shooting 285, 297, 292=874. Tennessee Wesleyan followed in second place by using a 1-over par first round and ended with 289, 295, 292=876.
