Dayton, Tenn. – After a tie ballgame at the half during Wednesday night's contest between the Bryan College Lions Men's Basketball team and fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference foe, the Yellow Jackets of Allen University (S.C.), the home team struggled to slow the Yellow Jackets in the second half as they outscored the Lions 51-42 en rout to an 86-77 victory. Both teams knew it would be a close game since their earlier meeting this season ended in a last-second four-point swing by Allen who stole the victory 87-86.
The loss dropped Bryan's overall record to 4-13 and conference record to 1-8, while Allen improved to 6-10 overall and 4-6 in AAC play.
Despite not coming away with the "W", the Lions had five player who notched double-digits in scoring with Wray Fuller (JR/Jackson, Tenn.) and Oteriah Lee (JR/Knoxville, Tenn.) leading the way with 20 points apiece and three rebounds, respectively. Lee led in assists after dishing out five. Brice Cusick (JR/Jefferson City, Tenn.) was one rebound short of his fourth double-double this season after dropping 13 points and corralling nine boards. Reagan Johnson (JR/Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) followed with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Tyler Yoder (JR/Crossville, Tenn.) rounded it out with 10 points and five boards.
The rebounds tilt Allen's way 43-31, and they forced Bryan to 21 turnovers while surrendering 18 of their own. The Yellow Jackets outshot the Lions 47.8 percent compared to their 42.4 percent. From behind the arc, Bryan was 11-of-27, which bettered Allen who completed 3-of-8.
Five minutes into the start of the game the Lions pulled ahead by six points with the help of a three-pointer by Yoder, 13-7. The Yellow Jackets responded with six unanswered points to level the score 13-13. Bryan continued to remain in front, but Allen rallied for seven unanswered points to take their first lead, 20-17, with ten minutes until halftime. A shot from deep by Johnson tied the game 20-20, but the Yellow Jackets swarmed to take the edge which was held until Lee sank a basket just before the clock ran out, tying the score 35-35 heading into the break.
The turning point came in the second half when Allen turned a five-point lead into a 14-point advantage with 11-straight points, 59-45, with 12 minutes left to go in the game. The difference proved too large for Bryan as the Yellow Jackets maintained a double-digit lead until the final minute. Back-to-back three's by Lee and Yoder with 30 seconds to go cut the margin to eight points, 85-77, but Allen hit one foul shot to seal an 86-77 win over Bryan.
The Lions are on the road this weekend as conference opponent Reinhardt University (Ga.) hosts Bryan on Saturday, Jan. 14, with tipoff slated for 4pm.
