Knoxville, Tenn. – It was no surprise to either the Bryan College Lions Men's Basketball team or the home team in the Johnson University Royals Tuesday night when both sides combined for 204 points, Bryan getting the win 109-95, after their earlier meeting in the season when the Lions outlasted the Royals 107-92. Even though Johnson was remarkable shooting 49.2 percent from the floor (32-of-65) and 47.7 percent from behind the arc (21-of-44), Bryan outperformed going 56.9 percent in the game (37-of-65) and 56.7 from three-point range (17-of-30). The Royals had the edge in rebounds 34-30 but turned the ball over 15 times compared to the Lion's nine turnovers.
The victory improves Bryan's overall record to 6-18 while remaining 2-13 against Appalachian Athletic Conference opponents, while Johnson dropped to 9-12 overall.
The Lions started the game with a 14-5 run. Nine points were cashed in by Brice Cusick (JR/Jefferson City, Tenn.) who knocked down one three-pointer, two scores from inside, and a thundering putback dunk that sent the crown into a roar. Bryan continued to shoot the ball consistently in the first half with the help of Tyler Yoder (JR/Crossville, Tenn.)'s three makes from downtown. The Lions finished the opening period 9-of-16 from deep. Bryan built a lead to 47-31 and eventually controlled a 50-35 halftime score.
Other major contributors in the first half were Terrance Scales (JR/Cedar Bluff, Ala.) who came off the bench to score eight points (2-of-2 from deep) and Oteriah Lee (JR/Knoxville, Tenn.) who guided the offense notching 12 of his 26 points.
The second half was explosive for the Lions as they built their lead to as many as 19 on three separate occasions, but 12-of-23 shooting in the period from three-point territory by Johnson kept them within striking distance. Unfortunately for the Royals, there was no stopping the Lion's blistering shooting as Reagan Johnson (JR/Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) led the way with three treys in the latter half and finished the game 5-of-10 behind the arc. Bryan left Johnson with no hope as they cruised to a 109-95 final.
Cusick had an outstanding effort despite foul trouble, ending with 24 points after shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and a perfect 6-of-6 at the foul line. The assist's leader was Lee who handed out six, and both Lee and Yoder matched for team-high rebounds with seven apiece.
Bryan returns home this weekend as they play host to fellow conference foe, St. Andrews University (N.C.), on Saturday, Feb. 4, with tipoff slated for 2pm.
