Dayton, Tenn. – The Bryan College Lions Men's Basketball team shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, outrebounded the Knights 35-34, and surrendered fewer turnovers, 18-20, en route to an 83-70 victory over fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, St. Andrews University (N.C.) at home Saturday evening. After trailing 43-42 at halftime, the Lions exploded in the second half and outscored the Knights 41-27 to capture the win.
Both sides met earlier in the season where St. Andrews escaped with 78-76 win, but there was no slowing the Lions down this time around as six players registered double-digit scoring. Oteriah Lee (JR/Knoxville, Tenn.) finished with a team-high 19 points and five assists on 7-of-10 shooting. Reagan Johnson (JR/Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) followed with 17 points and led Bryan with eight rebounds after going 3-of-7 behind the arc. Brice Cusick (JR/Jefferson City, Tenn.) was 5-of-11 for 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Wray Fuller (JR/Jackson, Tenn.) scored 11 points shooting 4-of-11, Tyler Yoder (JR/Crossville, Tenn.) had 10 points and seven rebounds, and Terrance Scales (JR/Cedar Bluff, Ala.) aided with 10 points and three rebounds. Riley Dempsey (SO/Dunlap, Tenn.) was the only other Lion to score, ending with four points.
Bryan was 44.4 percent shooting in the opening half and followed with a remarkable 53.6 percent in the second half, proving too much St. Andrews. Tied 11-11 to begin the contest, the Lions battled their way to their largest lead of the first half with an 8-0 run coming from a shot inside by Yoder, a successful and-one play by Fuller, and a trey cashed in by Johnson. Unfortunately the Knights responded and retook the lead after two tied points. The half remained close with eight total lead changes taking place. St. Andrews had the last answer before halftime, securing a 43-42 lead at the break.
As the second half got underway, the Knights continued to stay on top until the nine-minute mark when Lee made a move on his defender and lofted a floater over three St. Andrews players to even the score 57-57. The Knights responded with one free throw to take a 58-57 edge, but it would be the last St. Andrews would lead for the game. The Lions regained the lead when Scales capitalized on a second-chance opportunity. Bryan continued with a score from Lee and Yoder, providing the Lions with a 63-58 advantage with eight and a half minutes to go. With four minutes on the clock, the Lions possessed a 68-64 lead and managed to create an 11-point separation with seven unanswered points. Bryan wouldn't allow St. Andrews back in the game as the deficit never dipped below double-digits. The 83-70 final improved the Lion's overall record to 7-18 and AAC record to 3-13, while the Knights fell to 7-15 overall and 6-10 in conference play.
The Skyhawks of Point University (Ga.) host the Lions in midweek conference action on Wednesday, Feb. 8, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30pm.
