Bluffton, S.C. – In the first day of competition at the inaugural NAIA Softball Southeastern Challenge, the Bryan College Lions came up empty as they faced off against two tough opponents in 12th ranked Campbellsville University (Ky.) and 8th ranked Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.). Campbellsville managed to top two Appalachian Athletic Conference teams as they rained down runs against Bryan for an 8-3 win and followed it up with a 2-1 victory over No. 16 Reinhardt University (Ga.), beginning their season 2-0. It was also the season-opening contests for Lindsey Wilson as they outscored Reinhardt 10-7 to begin the day and registered three late runs versus Bryan to seal a 3-1 win, going undefeated at 2-0. The Lions entered the challenge 2-2, and the two losses dropped them to 2-4.

The field is stacked in the competition with eight of the top NAIA softball teams taking part in the three-day event. The challenge is being hosted by the University of South Carolina Beaufort at the Richard Gray Sports Complex. There are four conferences being represented: the AAC, The Sun Conference, the Southern States Athletic Conference, and the Mid-South Conference. Each team will play six games.

The Tigers used a solo homer in the top of the first to grab an early 1-0 lead over the Lions, but Bryan responded in the bottom of the frame for three runs. The rally began with Kim Borowski (SR/Apopka, Fla.) being walked, followed by a single up the middle by Hannah O'Shields (SO/LaFayette, Ga.), and a bases-clearing three-run bomb smashed over the right field fence by Becca Zimmerman (SR/Naples, Fla.). These were two of Bryan's five hits allowed in the game, while Campbellsville produced 10 hits that gave way to seven more runs. The Tigers collected three insurance runs in the top of the sixth coming by a leadoff homerun and an RBI double for an 8-3 final.

Bryan starting pitcher, Courtney Petty (FR/Lebanon, Tenn.), was given the loss after four innings that surrendered five hits and four runs, three of which were earned. She walked one and tossed four K's. Lindsey Dunn (FR/Murray County, Ga.) relieved for two innings and couldn't get in a groove as the Tigers swatted five hits and added four more runs against her. Madison Owens (FR/Dandridge, Tenn.) took over the final frame and kept Campbellsville hitless and sat down two via strikeouts.

The only Lion to have a multi-hit game was O'Shields who finished 2-of-3 at the plate with one run scored. Bryan's extra base hits were from Zimmerman's homerun and a double by Leslie Beecham (FR/Knoxville, Tenn.). Brooke Ford (SO/Naples, Fla.) tallied the other hit for Bryan.

Despite getting the loss against the impressive Mid-South Conference team in Lindsey Wilson, Bryan's Sydney West (SO/White House, Tenn.) had a strong outing by keeping the Blue Raiders to only six hits through a complete six innings in the circle. The deciding factor came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Lindsey Wilson strung together two hits, one being a homerun, that gave the Blue Raiders all three of their runs in the game. Bryan compiled six hits but left three on base and had only one run scored. The Lions avoided the blanking when Zimmerman led off with a single and advanced to second on a groundout by Beecham. Marissa Murray (JR/Hixson, Tenn.) delivered a double for her only hit of the outing, and it brought Zimmerman around to score in the top of the fourth. An error on the next play put Lions on first and third, but a groundout retired the inning. Bryan was unable to score any more runs as Lindsey Wilson took the victory with a 3-1 final.

Four of Bryan's hits were dealt by Heidi Smith (FR/Cookeville, Tenn.) and Zimmerman who finished with two hits apiece. Kayla Hayes (FR/Dresden, Tenn.) and Murray each added a hit, respectively, while Murray drove in the Lion's lone run.

The Lions look to bounce back in day two of the challenge when they meet with No. 10 in the country, William Carey University (Miss.), at 10am and follow it up with a head-to-head matchup against Faulkner University (Ala.) at 12:30pm.
