St. Simons Island, Ga. - The Bryan College Lions Men's Golf team opened its Spring 2017 season at the beautiful Retreat Course at St. Simon's Island as part of the 7th Annual Winter Invitational hosted by the College of Coastal Georgia. High winds and the challenging course layout led to higher scores on Day 1 for most teams, but Day 2 produced some wonderful weather and great conditions for improved results.
Senior Tom Durbin (SR/Widnes, Cheshire England) fired a team low 72 on Day 2, which was only two strokes from the lowest score of the tournament. Durbin's 80 and 72 for a 152 total placed him in the top-15 of 100 players in the tournament. He ended just seven strokes behind the medalist, Taylor Guilbeau (145), who is a part of Coastal Georgia. The Mariners were the overall team champion. It came as no surprise with Coastal Georgia winning the past two NAIA national championships.
Durbin's two-round total led the Lions in a 10th place finish out of the 20 teams in the event. On Day 1 juniors Nick Scully (JR/Carelton, Mich.) and Lucas Coffelt (JR/Jasper, Tenn.) had the top team scores with 76's. Scully finished second to Durbin firing a 76 and 82 for a 158, which landed him in 34th place. One stroke behind Scully was senior Hunter Bruce who tallied a 79 and 80 for 159, giving him a 40th place finish.
"I am proud of how Tom came back with such a strong 2nd round, and I also was pleased with Hunter putting back-to-back good rounds together on such a difficult course," said Bryan Head Coach, Peter Bollant. "Outside of Governor's Towne Club that we play in the national qualifier for the NAIA, this is probably the toughest course we play on all year. We performed quite well in the wind on Day 1 for so early in the season. I was hoping we could have followed that up with better conditions on Day 2. All in all, we were excited to join in such a high level tournament on such a remarkable course. It gives us an early gauge of things to work on as we prepare for our Appalachian Athletic Conference schedule."
The Lions are back in action this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25, at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club in Lookout Mountain, Ga., joining in Covenant College's Reeder Cup.
