Dayton, Tenn. – Chris Sauve (SR/Mascouche, Quebec) picked up his third win of the season as he hurled a complete seven innings, allowing Mid-South Conference opponent Shawnee State University (Ohio) only two hits and no runs, while walking only one and striking out seven as the Bryan College Lions Baseball Team blanked the Bears 4-0 in game one of their doubleheader Friday.
The Lions produced most of their offense in the bottom of the second inning when Fernando Garcia (JR/Kissimmee, Fla.) cracked a leadoff double and was brought home when CJ Owens (SR/Oakland, Calif.) belted a two-run homerun on a 0-2 count. The next batter, Hudson Clare (SR/Jacksonville, Fla.), continued the rally for Bryan with his first homer of the season on a solo shot, providing the Lions with a 3-0 advantage.
Garcia delivered once again in the bottom of the sixth with a triple. Owens plated Garcia for the last run of the game with a sacrifice fly, sealing the 4-0 defeat of the Bears.
As a team, Bryan outhit Shawnee State 9-2 while both sides went without an error. Garcia shined with a 3-of-3 performance at the plate with a double, triple, and a team-high two runs scored. Besides Clare's homerun, Owens compiled the three other RBI's. Owens now has three homeruns on the year. Clare also slotted a double. Justin Morhardt (JR/Winsted, Conn.) picked up a pair of hits in his three at-bats. Kila Zuttermeister (JR/Kailua, HI) recorded the only other hit for Bryan.
The Lions were consistent in game two as they plated runs in every inning except the sixth. One run was tallied by Shawnee State in the first and third innings, but their other five came in the top of the fourth. Bryan had a strong start with four runs in the bottom of the first. Zuttermeister reached base on a misplayed grounder to begin the inning. A single by Morhardt put Zuttermeister in scoring position at third. Prentice Young (SR/Oak Ridge, Tenn.) entered to pinch run for Morhardt and made his way to second following an RBI single ripped by Trevor Behrent (JR/Catawissa, Pa.), scoring Zuttermeister. A Garcia single loaded the bases with no outs. Owens came through with a bases-clearing double, plating Young, Behrent, and Garcia for a 4-0 lead.
A single, stolen base, and an error was all it took for the Bears to make it 4-1 in the top of the second. Morhardt added two runs to the Lion's lead when he scored Zuttermeister on a two-run bomb over the Senter Field fence, bringing the score to 6-1 through two innings. A Shawnee State player singled, stole second, went to third on a groundout, and crossed home plate off a single as they slowly chipped away at Bryan's lead. The Lions continued to create separation with two runs in the bottom of the third. Owens reached base on a single and then stole second. Clare hit a single that put Owens at third. Tyler Scott (FR/Calgary, Alberta) hit into a groundout, but it was good enough to score Owens and advance Clare to third. A Mikey Rita (JR/Kalaheo, HI) single scored Clare, giving Bryan an 8-2 advantage over Shawnee State. The Bears scored the most runs in an inning with five as they dug deep at a comeback. The runs were plated off a three-run jack and a two RBI double. Fortunately, that would be all Shawnee State could produce as Bryan silenced them through the last three innings. Along the way, the Lions added one run in the bottom of the fourth when Wade Weinburger (FR/James Cistern, Bahamas) led off with a single. He took advantage of a wild throw to travel to second. Sam Salyers (JR/Kingsport, Tenn.) scored Weinburger off a single as Bryan controlled a 9-7 lead. The last two runs by the Lions came in consecutive plays to open the bottom of the fifth. Clare smashed his second homerun of the two-game series and was followed with a run scored by Scott when he was hit by a pitch and brought in as a result of a Rita double for an 11-7 final.
Tristan Legault (SO/Mascouche, Quebec) got the win with 3.1 innings tossed, allowing five hits, five runs but four earned, walking one, and dealing a pair of K's. Zane Glass (JR/Murfreesboro, Tenn.) was awarded his first save of the season after entering in the fourth inning and lasting 3.2 innings with two hits, two earned runs, and three strikeouts to show for it.
Bryan outhit Shawnee State 14-7, with Morhardt, Garcia, Owens, Clare, and Rita all tallying two apiece. Owens led with three runs batted and registered a double. Rita also hit a double and ended with two RBI's. Morhardt and Clare knocked out Homeruns in the Lion's only other extra-base hits. Zuttermeister and Clare ended with a team-leading two runs scored, respectively. Behrent, Salyers, Weinburger, and Zuttermeister each aided with one hit apiece.
Bryan extends their win-streak to six and improves their overall record to 11-5 while dropping Shawnee State to 3-10. The Lions continue their weekend play at home on Saturday, Feb. 25, in doubleheader action with the No. 14 team in the nation, Campbellsville University (Ky.). The first pitch of the day is schedule to be thrown out at 1pm.
