Gulf Shores, Ala. – The Bryan College Track and Field Team will have one member competing for the final time of is his career as a Lion, Tyler Boone (SR/Murfreesboro, Tenn.), at the 66th annual NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship Meet, which is set to take place May 25-27 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The meet starts on Thursday, but the two-time Appalachian Athletic Conference runner of the year, two-time track national qualifier, seven-time All-Conference team member, and this year's male Bryan College Lion of Valor recipient will see his first action on Friday during the men's 5,000-meter preliminary round slated for 7pm. Boone ran a 15:52.89 at the 2017 AAC Men's Track and Field Championship Meet, which was hosted by Montreat College (N.C.) on Apr. 21-22. Milligan College's (Tenn.) Taylor Tafelsky was the only individual to turn in a faster time than Boone with a 15:39.52 mark.
There will be two heats, and Boone will be battling for a top-12 time. The first four finishers in each heat, along with the four fastest times that follow, will punch their ticket to the final 5,000-meter race on Saturday at 5:55pm. Of the 30 contenders that Boone will be facing off with, the latter 20's best times are separated by a mere 15 seconds, so the runners will have to turn in their most impressive times if they hope to make it to the final day.
Boone hasn't only shined as a track and field athlete, but he will go down in history as one of the most decorated Lions of the cross country and track & field programs. He is a three-time cross country national qualifier, two-time track national qualifier in the 3k and 5k events, two-time AAC cross country champion, Bryan's first ever back-to-back AAC cross country champion, and in total is a four-time AAC victor. Last season, Boone placed 39th at the NAIA Cross Country Nationals, which was the 5th best finish in program history, and was the 9th competitor to cross the finish line during the 3k event at nationals.
Head Coach of Cross Country/Track & Field, Josh Bradley, stated, "Tyler Boone has made a positive impact on our team since his freshman year. He has not only scored on the conference level and run fast on the national level of competition, but he has been a consummate leader on and off the track. Tyler leads by example athletically and spiritually. Tyler makes my job, as a coach, very easy because he is a hard worker, and he cares about his teammates. He goes out of his way to make sure that he and my other athletes are striving to reach the goals they have set out for themselves."
