Dayton, Tenn. – In their first home game of the 2017 season, the Bryan College Lions Women's Soccer team were handed their second loss of the year, moving to a 0-2 start, after a lone goal netted in the opening period by Shorter University proved enough for the Hawk's to register a 1-0 win Wednesday evening. It also marked the first win for Shorter as they improved their overall record to 1-1.
The Gulf South Conference opponent managed to tie the Lions in total shots as each side saw six attempts, but despite Bryan having half of the looks on target, it was Shorter's lone shot on goal that decided the game. In the 32nd-minute, Hawks Maddy Morlock broke through the Lion's defense and hit an open Corrie Thomas who delivered a strike that found the back of the net, giving Shorter a 1-0 lead that would be held for the remainder of the game.
Shorter successfully played keep-away, allowing Bryan only one chance at an equalizer in the second half. Ana Ramirez (JR/Garland, Texas) entered back in the latter period midway through and at 79:17 ripped a shot that traveled wide. Neither side would take a shot in the last 10 minutes as the Hawks soared away with the 1-0 win.
Ramirez applied the most pressure by Bryan as she led the team with three looks and one on target. Both Ruth Rosales (SR/El Salto, Mexico) and Makena Giles (FR/Athens, Tenn.) each tallied a shot in the match, but Shorter's goalkeeper Sydney Durham secured the saves and ended the outing with a trio of stops.
The Lady Lions will remain at home as they host the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe University on Friday, Sept. 7 with kickoff slated for 5pm.
