Dayton, Tenn. – The University of the Cumberlands Patriots had outlasted the Bryan College Lions Women's Volleyball team on Aug. 29 in Williamsburg, Ky., but on Friday night the Lions looked to settle the score with the red and blue Mid-South Conference foe on their home court. Midway through the first set, a series of points went Cumberlands way as they took the first set 25-20. After falling behind early in set two, the Lions were unable to claw their way back dropping the frame 25-12. Despite Bryan closing the gap late in the final set, the comeback effort was too late as Cumberlands closed out the set 25-19 for the sweep, improving to 5-4 overall and dropping the Lions to 2-9.
Set one was a thriller for the fans in Summers Gymnasium as each side battled for a total of 10 tied points. The score was 10-10 and the combination of Veronica Salas (JR/Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Mariah Dunlop (JR/Bradenton, Fla. ) helped the Lions gain an edge as Salas set up the assist and Dunlop fired away a devastating kill. Dunlop kept the momentum going with an ace, putting Bryan out in front 12-10, but Cumberlands responded with a 6-1 and never looked back. The Patriots went on to lead by as many as seven points as they earned an early 1-0 advantage after taking the first set 25-20.
It was all Cumberlands as the second set unfolded with the Patriots surging ahead 9-3 to start the frame. Bryan was able to scrape up nine points before Cumberlands sealed set two 25-12, in search of the sweep heading into the last set.
The closest the Lions would come to the lead in the third set was when the score was tied 5-5. An attack error by Bryan and kill by the Patriots gave Cumberlands a 7-5 advantage. The largest the deficit would grow to in the final frame was six points, but the Patriots kept their distance, capturing the set 25-19 and the win in sweep style.
On offense, Bryan compiled 27 kills and a .117 attack percentage, while Cumberlands produced 39 kills and averaged .290. Dunlop led the team in the kills column with nine and swatted an impressive .333 with Emalie Hicks (SO/Calhoun, Ga.) sliding in second with seven put-aways. Five kills went to Brooke Stowell (SR/Knoxville, Tenn.), and Hope Burnett (SR/Asheville, N.C.) finished with four. The Lion's assists leader was Salas who ended with 10, and Jennifer Keck (SO/Knoxville, Tenn.) trailed closely with nine. The only Bryan player to collect double-digit digs was Kristen Parrish (SR/Decatur, Ala.) with 14. The Lions owned the block battle 2-1.
Bryan gets a break over the weekend and returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at home against fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference opponent, Montreat College (N.C.), scheduled for 6:30pm.
