Dayton, Tenn. – Past, present, and future Lions witnessed an all-out battle on the pitch during Saturday's match between the Bryan College Men's Soccer team and highly skilled United States Collegiate Athletic Association member Florida National University, which highlighted the Bryan College's 2017 homecoming festivities. The contest was action-packed from opening kickoff till the final seconds expired on the clock as both sides created 10 shots apiece, taking an equal amount of attempts in each half. The statistically even game was decided by a lone goal netted by Florida National's Victor Aguiar just over ten minutes into the start of the second period, helping keep the Conquistadors undefeated at 11-0 overall this season, which includes nine shutouts and just one game ending in a tie (1-1, versus NCAA Div. I Florida Gulf Coast University). Bryan moved their overall record to 8-5 and still control a 4-1 record in conference play.
It was only three minutes into the game that the Lion's Charlie Clarke (JR/Norwich, England) showed the Conquistadors that Bryan was looking to apply pressure quick for an early score as he delivered a strike that sailed over the crossbar. As the first half went on, each side took turns countering with attacks, but the back lines remained aggressive and kept each other scoreless at the break.
After four first-half shots registered by Bryan and Florida National, respectively, the Lions and Conquistadors found more success offensively with each team producing six shots in the latter half. In the 56th-minute, Bryan moved the ball down the left side of the field and into the box before kicking out to Brad Spooner (SO/Norwich, England). Spooner corralled the pass, shook a defender, and unleashed a shot but found the hands of Rodrigo Fettuccia for his first save of the day. Three minutes passed before Florida National broke the silence with the game-winning goal as Aguiar took the ball from Bryan before the Lions could clear it downfield. He capitalized on his only shot of the outing by finding the back of the net, lifting the Conquistadors to a 1-0 win.
Both goalkeepers secured a trio of saves, while Florida National ended with a one shot on goal edge over Bryan (4-3). Spooner led the Lions in the shot's column with three and one on target, followed by Kevin Roenpage (SR/Bremen, Germany)'s two looks and one on goal. Clarke, Jonathan Ricketts (SO/Dayton, Tennessee), Joao Paulo, Marcelo Monteiro (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil), and Arthur Dombrowski each tallied one shot.
With only five games remaining for Bryan in the regular-season, the Lions head to Johnson City, Tenn. on Tuesday, Oct. 10 for an Appalachian Athletic Conference showdown with the Buffaloes of Milligan College at 4pm.
