On a wet, yet sunny afternoon, the Bryan College Baseball team got off to a hot start for the 2010 season. The visiting Truett-McConnell Bears played well, but could not seem to stop the Lions' offense. The Lions scored in 8 of 12 innings yesterday on their way to beating the Bears 8-5 and 7-4.
Zack Breault started on the hill for the Lions in game 1, striking out 2 of the first 3 hitters he faced on the way to 5 innings pitched, 7 strikeouts, 3 hits, and 0 runs given up. The Lion offense scored 8 runs in the first 3 innings of the game behind Josh King, who had 2 HR's and 4 RBI's in his first 2 at bats of the season. Pablo Rodriguez also hit well for the Lions going 3-for-3 with 2 RBI's. Jonathan Davis, Drew Brown, and Shane Clawson also added 2 hits each.
Truett-McConnell mounted a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring 5 runs before Ben Young was able to stem the tide. Josh Smith came into the game for the Lions in the seventh and got the save, striking out 1 and getting 2 fly balls.
In Game 2, Truett McConnell got on the board first, scoring 2 runs off of freshman Lion starter Josh Harris. In his first collegiate start, Harris went 4 innings giving up 2 runs in the first inning, and then shutting the Bears down in the next 3. Zach Breazeale came in to pitch in the fifth inning and went 3 innings for the save.
After being down in the first inning, the Lion offense came to life, scoring at least one run from the second through the sixth innings. Jonathan Davis tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run to deep left center. The Lions scored 2 more in the bottom of the fourth, after a leadoff walk and an error lead to a ground out RBI for Jordan Day and a single by Trey Colvard to score the second run. The Lions put 3 more runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings to get the win 7-4.
Overall, it is a great start to the season for the Lions! Bryan will travel to Emmanuel College on Friday, the 5th of February, for a 3-game series.
