The Bryan College Baseball team traveled to Emmanuel College on Saturday, February 6, to play a doubleheader. On a windy afternoon, the Lions lost the 9-inning Game 1 14-7, but rebounded in Game 2 11-5.
Emmanuel took an early lead in Game 1, when Eric McGee hit a 2-run homerun in the first inning to give the Lions of Emmanuel a 2-0 lead. They added another run of Bryan starter Daniel Zimmerman in the bottom of the 2nd inning. In the top of the 4th, the Bryan offense got going to tie the game when Shane Clawson, Josh King and Jonathan Brown strung together three singles, followed by William Colvard's sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, the bottom of Emmanuel's lineup got things going again and answered with 5 runs of their own to retake the lead in the bottom of the 4th inning, 8-3. Despite the efforts of the Bryan lineup to catch up, key errors by their defense combined with timely hitting by Emmanuel gave Bryan their first loss of the year, 14-7.
Game 2 saw Emmanuel College again score first as they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning off of Bryan College starter Adam Polston. In his first start since 2008, Polston went 4 innings only walking one and giving up 3 earned runs. Supported by the Bryan offense, which took the lead in the 3rd inning and put up 6 runs on the board in the 5th inning, Polston got his first win of the 2010 season. Freshman Josh Harris led the attack in the 5th inning with a 2-run homerun to break a 3-3 tie, and the Lions strung together 3 more hits and 4 more runs in the inning. Emmanuel attempted a comeback against Bryan reliever Zach Breazeale, scoring 1 run in the 5th and 7th innings, but it wasn't enough and Breazeale received the save as Bryan won 11-5.
Bryan College improves to 3-1 on the year and will be at home against the University of Rio Grande this weekend for a 3-game series.
