The Lions hosted the RedStorm of the University of Rio Grande this past weekend for a 3-game series. Bryan dropped the Friday night game, but split the games on Saturday.
In the game on Friday, the RedStorm jumped out on top to score a run in the first inning. The Lions scored 3 runs in the fourth to take the lead on a homerun by Jonathan Davis, a Josh Harris RBI double (scoring Pablo Rodriguez, who had been walked), and sacrifice fly by Andrew Brown (scoring Shane Clawson, who had been walked). However, the Lions gave up 3 runs in the fifth inning and then 11 more in the sixth to lose 15-3. Outside of the fourth inning, the Lions' offense struggled as they produced only 2 hits the rest of the game. Starter Adam Polston was given the loss for the Lions.
In the first game on Saturday, the lead went back and forth before the RedStorm ended the game on top 8-5. Rio Grande struck first, scoring a run in the top of the second inning. The Lions scored 2 runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Andrew Brown hit a single to score Zach Hensley, who was pinch running for Pablo Rodriguez and Shane Clawson, both having been walked. In the fourth inning, both teams scored 2 runs. The Lions' first run of the inning came off a homerun by Jonathan Brown, and the second run came off of a sacrifice fly from Kevin Layne (scoring Josh King who had been walked). The RedStorm then scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth inning to take an 8-5 lead, which would hold for the rest of the game. Starter Zack Breault received the loss.
The second game on Saturday saw the lead go back and forth again, except this time the game ended with the Lions on top 10-8. Bryan scored first, knocking in 4 runs in the third inning. Pablo Rodriguez hit a double to score Josh King, who had hit a single to get on base; then Josh Harris hit a 3-run homerun scoring Pablo Rodriguez, Shane Clawson who was walked, and himself. In the fourth inning, Rio Grande scored two runs followed by the Lions scoring 3 more runs. Andrew Smith, who had been walked, scored the first run on a double by Josh King. Then Ryan Henn (walked) and Josh King scored as Jonathan Davis hit a single. The RedStorm then scored 6 runs in the top of the fifth inning to take the lead. However, in the bottom of the sixth inning, Shane Clawson hit what turned into the game-winning 3-run homerun scoring Jonathan Davis who had hit a single, Zach Hensley who was pinch running for Pablo Rodriguez (walked), and himself. Pitcher Josh Harris got the win for the Lions.
The Lions are now 4-3 overall. They play again this Thursday-Saturday in the Bryan College Invitational. On Thursday, they will host Toccoa Falls College at 6:00pm ET.
